Introduction Paragraph:

People today can relate to this passage because Erenesto Gallarzo describes that teachers have the power to instill pride in students. Gallarzo uses characterization in Barrio Boy in order to teach the readers the central idea of the text, which is that teachers have the power to instill pride in students.

Body Paragraph:

One piece of evidence that proves that teachers have the power to instill pride in students is, "It was easy for me to feel that becoming a proud American, as she said we would, did not mean feeling ashamed of being a Mexican (paragraph 3, lines 5-7). This evidence proves the central idea because, as she teaches her students to assimilate into a new culture, she also encourages them to be proud of who they are and where they came from. A second piece of evidence from the text that proves the central idea is the way she celebrated student success. When a student would master a new task, she would announce it to the class and have them demonstrate it publicly (paragraph 5, lines 8-10). This evidence proves the central idea because she made the students feel proud of themselves for learning a new task; it makes people feel proud to be publicly acknowledged for an accomplishment. One literary device that Erenesto Gallarzo uses to develop or enhance the central idea of Barrio Boy is characterization. Characterization is defined as the ways in which an author reveals the description of a character, which includes speech, thoughts, effects on others, actions and appearance. One piece of evidence the author's use of characterization is the way in which he characterizes Miss Ryan. He characterizes Miss Ryan as patient and supportive. She is patient and supportive because she spends time with each student and encourages their progress (paragraph 6, lines 1-3). The use of this literary device helps develop the central idea of the text because it is precisely Miss Ryan's personality that enables the students to grow and become proud individuals. A teacher would never be able to instill pride in a student if they were not supportive and patient.
