Career Research Project/Presentation

Directions: You will create a poster (or power point if you own a laptop) in which you research your future career. You will be required to know this research well as you will be presenting it to the class. You MUST include the following information (2-4 sentences for each of the numbered requirements below; summarize researched information in your own words!):

1. Your Top Five Colleges with Your Field of Study--Include the following: -Location, SAT average score, grade point average, tuition

2. Training, Qualifications, and Advancement: What education do you need? What advanced degrees are required? What specific skills, licenses, and/or certifications are needed?

3. Nature of the Work: What could you expect on a daily basis in this career? What are the responsibilities of this work? Sample answers: A music producer needs to work with audio engineering, high-tech music software, and song composition. She should also be comfortable with financial analysis and high-stress environments.

4. Personal Traits: What are the distinguishing features or characteristics of this career? Sample answers: For a teacher, common traits would include the following: leadership qualities, conscientiousness, and a contagious love for learning.

5. Trends/Outlook: What are the new developments in this field? Think about how these new developments may influence your entrance into this field. Will these trends help or hurt your career choice? Sample answers: For a career in teaching, you will find that more people from corporate America are becoming teachers. One new trend is threats against tenure and other benefits that teachers have been given over the years. There is a major trend in incorporating a greater use of technology.

6. Job Availability: What are the job opportunities in your field of study? Include the locations you prefer and locations that offer better job prospects.

7. Earning Potential: What’s a starting salary? What’s a top-earning salary? Any opportunities for higher earning potential?

8. Related Occupations: What are three or more careers that require similar skills and aptitudes?

9. Challenges/Drawbacks: What are some possible challenges that you didn’t realize in this career choice? Sample answers: For teachers, heavy workloads and unmotivated/disrespectful students may prevent people from entering or staying in the field.

10 Images: You can get pictures from the internet, newspapers, magazines, or you can take them yourself. You must write a caption under each picture in which you include a description and relevance to your project.

* For those of you who have your OWN laptops---you may give a power point presentation--be creative.

** Make sure your bulletin board has an appropriate, original title along with your name printed somewhere.
